Union Members Step Up to the Plate for the Community
Union members stepped up to the plate Saturday, raising $4,000 for flood relief in the Ohio Valley through a charity softball tournament that brought together the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) and the Roofers Union.
Charity Softball Tournament Brings Trades Together
The event was hosted by Laborers Local 1149 of Wheeling and Laborers Local 809 of Steubenville at the St. Clairsville Junior Sports Complex. Proceeds benefited the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Flood Relief Fund, which helps local families and communities impacted by recent flooding.

Friendly Competition for a Worthy Cause
Four teams competed in a round-robin format:
- Laborers Local 1149
- Laborers Local 809
- Roofers Local 188 of Wheeling
- The WVALDC Team — made up of laborers from Local 616 in Cumberland, Maryland, and Local 1149
The top two teams advanced to the championship game, where Laborers Local 1149 defeated Local 809, 20–13, to claim the title.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
Organizers said the tournament was a major success and plan to expand it next year to include more teams and raise additional funds for local causes.
Events like these highlight the strong sense of community and solidarity among West Virginia’s skilled trades — proving that teamwork extends well beyond the jobsite.
